    Learn More About EDT

Need to learn a little more about EDT? These videos are brilliant from the RSA at explaining everything there is to know.

    What is Essential Driver Training?

It’s a terrible fact but young inexperienced drivers are more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash more than other road users. That’s why the RSA have introduced the ETD course for learner drivers to become safe road users. EDT is not required if your first learner permit was issued before 4 April 2011.

What is a EDT Sponsor Driver?

A EDT sponsor is an experienced driver who accompanies you the learner driver in your practice driving sessions. Sponsors are often family members or close friends of you the learner drivers. The RSA’s Essential Driver Training (EDT) programme has identified the sponsor as playing a key role in safe driving education.

    The Sponsor’s Responsibilities

If you have been asked by a learner driver to be their sponsor, and have accepted, you are taking on an important role. Research tells us that accompanying drivers can have a real impact on the learning to drive process.

Although you are not expected to teach the learner driver, by offering support and encouragement, you will increase the learner’s enthusiasm for practicing driving. In your interactions with the learner driver, you should:

    • Show interest in their progress
    • Encourage them and praise their progress
    • Assure them they can rely on your experience in difficult road situations
    • Reinforce that safe driving takes lots of persistence, patience and practice

    The learner’s EDT logbook

When you start your EDT driving lessons, you will be given an EDT logbook in which you and me record details of each EDT driving lesson. The logbook also has a page for sponsors to record details of any practice undertaken by the learner.

You can use the information in the learner’s EDT logbook to help plan out practice sessions and to pinpoint areas of learning to focus on.

Please also ensure you bring your EDT logbook to each driving lesson. While my relationship is with you the learner, your Sponsor may be able to raise issues with the me through the EDT logbook.

    Commonly Asked EDT Questions

What is Essential Driver Training (EDT)?

Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a structured training programme put together by the Road Safety Authority for learner drivers. It gives new drivers a stronger foundation of training on which they can build their knowledge and skills. The lessons cover the most important skills, knowledge, and behaviors needed to become a safe driver.

Why do I have to do this Essential Driver Training?

The purpose of EDT is to save lives by maximising the safety of inexperienced drivers and helping them to develop the skills and confidence needed to share the road safely with others. The introduction of EDT for learner drivers is part of the Road Safety Strategy 2007-2012 and is one of a range of measures announced by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) last September to enhance the way that drivers are trained, tested and licensed in Ireland as part of a new Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) system.

Do I need to do Essential Driver Training?

If your first learner permit for a car is dated on or after 4th April 2011, you must complete EDT. All learner drivers must have completed EDT before they can sit a driving test.

How long does it take to complete the EDT?

EDT for learner drivers is a 12 hour lessons broken into 12 different one hour lessons. It is recommended that you allow two weeks between each lesson so that you can take any further driving lessons needed and do the required reading and necessary practice.

How much does the EDT lessons cost me?

The price of our EDT driving lessons can be found here. To avail of this price you must make payment in full at the time of your first EDT driving lesson. There is a pay per EDT lesson option but unfortunately you will not avail of the offer price.

What happens when I have finished my EDT lessons?

I will have stamped each EDT lesson as completed inside your logbook. Keep it safe as you may need to show it to your driver tester on the day of your test. Remember, your training does not finish with EDT so continue to practise your driving with your Sponsor and taking extra driving lessons until you can take your test.

Is there an exam at the end of my EDT training?

No, there is no exam at the end of EDT. However, each lesson has specific content that must be covered as part of the lesson. You can only achieve expected outcomes from each lesson by listening carefully to me and taking the necessary further lessons and practice in addition to the EDT programme.

Choosing the right Driving School for you!

Do not take learning to drive for granted. Yes there are plenty of Driving School’s all across Dublin offering EDT driving lesson “deals” and “cut-prices” but be WARNED that you will be getting exactly what you paid for.
    Things to look out for:

    • Is the Instructor RSA ADI approved?
    • Have they plenty of Experience?
    • Do they have a good track record?
    • Question the price, why so cheap?
